The Art of Forgetting

Posted on 00:36 by Unknown
Portrait of Margaret van Eyck , 41.2cm x 34.6cm. Groeningemuseum, Bruges, 1439

We meet numerous and various kind of people.  Some are new faces; some are old friends. Some search for a sincere hug; some offer you a gentle hug. Some bring you down; some give you wings to fly. Some love you; some you’ve come to love more than most. It was impossible to remember all of them and it would be irrational for you to remember every ass-hat-whack-job in your life. It is unfair and poisonous for your heart.

When we insulted someone, when we called someone ‘bitch’ or ‘ass’ or ‘bastard’, it was actually our reality, not theirs no matter how objective or fair our evaluation was.  This asymmetric reality was the reason why people felt the need to forget someone and also the source of pain when we were being forgotten.

It was always easier to forget someone that left no prints, but more often than most, people we needed to forget were the ones that carved so many marks in our life.  Let me tell you this, it is impossible to forget them unless you had amnesia or actually became senile. This is where forgetting someone becomes an art.  It is the right time to become Jan van Eyck who beautifully created layers of images or an extremely ignorant curator who allows a painting to fade.

People love the first one, the Jan van Eyck thing.  You start to remember all the bad things about your exes (Xs), over-paint the memories, and blame Xs for your inability to move on.  But the thing is…you are no van Eyck and you will end up with disfigured images of your Xs. I once advised someone to do this because this is relatively easier than what’s going to come next (the fade thing). However, personally, I don’t like to do this. I don’t want to disfigure someone’s image just for my own sake; label him or her as a bad person, so I can feel better for breaking-up with him/her. That’s not right, quite low actually.  But, don’t get me wrong…this standard only applies to me. I never asked my friends to march to the same drummer. I know that forgetting someone is hard and painful to varying degree. Maybe my feeling about break-up is not as intense as some of my friends ^_^. So, judgment-free zone here ;)

The second method of forgetting is the ignorant curator style. Say you had an intimate relationship with a painting once; you cleaned her, restored her beauty, but then…So, what should you do next? Hang the painting in the corner and let it stays there. Go to school, go to work, eat, sleep…keep yourself busy with satisfying activities (charity works, nailing IELTS test) or fun ones (watch movies, play video games) with your friends or odd ones (fill a pickup truck with pillows and blankets, drive it somewhere quiet at night, sleep on the back of the truck, and stargaze).  The trick is keeping your brain busy enough, so it does not have the time to think about the painting. Do it one step at a time, day after day, until the painting become less and less important.  This way you can retain your happy memories and you can also recall them as ‘something from the past’ with a lighter heart.

Who am I to give an advice? Hahahah.

Cheers,
Dya

Armies
from the afterlife

By
Demi Braque

Academy
award-winning actor Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) returns to the screen to
headline the 3D supernatural action-adventure R.I.P.D. (Rest in Peace
Department).

Bridges shares stellar billing with Ryan Reynolds as two cops dispatched
by the otherworldly law-enforcing agency to protect and serve the living from
an increasingly destructive array of creatures who refuse to move peacefully
into the afterlife.

Bridges
plays Roycephus “Roy” Pulsifer, a legendary police agent tracking monstrous
souls lingering among the living as ordinary people. After serving several
tours of duty from multiple infractions on the department, Roy has assumed the ‘been
there, seen that’ attitude.

Reynolds,
on the other hand, takes on the role of Nick Walker, a recently slain cop who
joins the team of undead police officers as he tries to avenge his untimely
demise on the man who murdered him, Hayes (Kevin Bacon). Together, the duo
returns to the streets of Boston in their avatars: Bridges as a buxom blonde
(Marissa Miller) and Reynolds as an aging Chinese man (James Hong).

Distributed
in the Philippines by United International Pictures and Solar Entertainment,
the comic caper is directed by Robert Schwentke, currently showing in cinemas
nationwide.

Docker's Fall/Holiday 2013

Posted on 02:58 by Unknown

Featuring
autumn hues of California’s bay area

By
Earl D.C. Bracamonte

Dockers,
the well-loved men’s khaki, launched its Fall/Holiday 2013 collection at the 7th
High Club in Bonifacio High Street recently; celebrating the coming season with
themed creations.

Simply
dubbed “Fall Into Khaki,” the trunk collection is perhaps one of the brand’s
most diverse collection yet. Celebrating not only incomparable khaki pants
inspired by the abundant local arts and trade movements native to San
Francisco, but also of khakis with the perfect mix of casual and dressed-up
design solutions that defy the norms yet embody each wearer’s personality
wherever he goes.

“This
is our widest and most diverse range to date that’s inspired from the fall
colors around San Francisco, a haven for artists – and of what you’ll see on
the Fisherman’s Wharf or the Farmers’ Market at that time of the year. The play
of colors and our new files is beamed toward capturing a younger market. The
new cuts are targeted to the college or university man; to give the feel of
maturity to a much younger crowd,” shared marketing manager Rhea Akil.

The
pants company continues to explore its San Francisco roots with a collection of
staple wardrobe essentials that are both directional but timeless in approach.
The resulting F/H 2013 range is designed to make a statement without screaming
it. And led by the new Alpha and SF Collections, the brand is certain to do
just that.

The
Dockers Alpha and SF Collections fuse rugged and refined design options that
are built on the spirit of the ‘maker’ by combining elements of creative
expression, determination, superior attention to detail, and exceptional
craftsmanship.

“The
F/H 2013 collection is till about getting dressed to impress with khaki pants
in mind. Our new range is not only trendy, young, comfy and classy but also a
perfect ensemble for men of conviction, character, purpose and commitment.
Dockers is what men wear on Fridays after the Mon-Thurs uniform while weekends
are for jeans. So we sort of found our niche market.

“Since
2011, we’ve been offering slimmer silhouettes as they’re appropriate for the
Pinoy body type. We pioneered branding and fit and how to do the khaki pants.
Filipinos are experimenting with their clothes, whether in colors or tightness
of fit. It is reflective of a healthier lifestyle and slimmer bodies.

“We
have two collection cycles: June-Nov for our Fall/Holiday creations; and
Dec-May for our Spring/Summer collections. Asia and Europe still offer
exclusively men’s apparel and accessories (belts, caps, underwear and wallets) but
our US stores has merchandise for both men and women,” Rhea added.

The
Dockers brand has embodied the spirit of khaki for more than 25 years now.
Since their introduction in 1986, it has been perfecting khakis, as well as the
essential goods to go with them, all over the globe. With no compromises in
quality, the brand delivers versatile everyday style day and night, Monday
through Sunday. Check out any of the Dockers stores at Festival, Glorietta 3,
Robinsons Manila, Power Plant Mall, Trinoma, Ayala Cebu and Centrio Ayala Mall
in Cagayan de Oro City. For more information, simply log-on to their Web site,
www.dockers.com.

Miss World Philippines 2013

Posted on 01:59 by Unknown

Veejay wins third MWP title

By Earl D.C. Bracamonte

MYX veejay and 'Misibis Bay' star Megan Young bested 24 other aspirants to
emerge as the third winner of the Miss World Philippines’ (MWP) search under
the CQ Global Quest franchise, at the close of the pageant’s rites inside the
grand ballroom of the Solaire Resort & Casino in Pasay City. Prior to CQGQ,
the local Miss World tilt was part of the BinibiningPilipinas Charities Inc.
(BPCI) annual pageant titles.

“I’m so happy that I’ve won. Now, I’ll be busy preparing
for the Miss World pageant that unfolds next month. A lot of people convinced
me to join before, but this time it was my decision to compete. Winning the
crown is my way of giving back to others,” declared the Olongapo City delegate
minutes after being crowned the new Miss World Philippines.

As part of winning the MWP title, Megan was also
accorded the honors of being named Miss Solaire and Miss Slimmers World by
corporate sponsors. An early favorite, she also bagged the Best in Fashion
Runway, Miss Sports by FILA, Miss Reticin, Miss Olay, Miss Laguna, Miss Revlon
(Bold & Glamorous), Miss Figlia, and Miss Bench Body special corporate
awards. Aside from the beautifully crafted trophy, she took home a whooping
P250K in cash, P250K worth of jewelry, P250K worth of FILA products, and a
year-long management contract with GMA-7 and the AOV Talent Management Agency.

The members of Megan’s royal court are Janicel Lubina
(1stPrincess), Zara Bianca Saldua (2nd Princess), Ma.
Bianca Paula Paz (3rd Princess) and Omarie Lim Osunna (4th
Princess). Aside from Osunna, all the other runners-up were recipients of
special awards. Lubina won as Best in Swimsuit and Miss Photogenic; Saldua was
proclaimed Miss Friendship and Miss Pantene; and Paz was named Miss Redoxfat.

Ma. Bianca Paula Paz’s ecru gown of fabulously
concocted cut-outs won for the second-timer the Best in Long Gown award. The
delegate from Nueva Ecija won this same award when she first joined in 2011.
She also landed in the exact same spot as 3rd Princess in both
pageants!

The runners-up received cash prizes of P150,000;
P100,000; 75,000 and P50,000 in descending order, plus price packages from
corporate sponsors. The other special award recipients were Patricia
Ejercitado, who was named Miss Novuhair, and Samantha Mae Bernardo, who was
adjudged Miss Talent.

Saldua was the only entrant to wear a monokini in the
swimwear segment due to her Moslem faith. All the other girls wore identical
FILA bikinis. She’s the first Mohammedan to have landed in the pageant’s Circle
of Five in its 3-year history.

The competition opened with the candidates dancing
with reigning Miss World Philippines Queenrich Rehman as she sang JLo’s “Live
It Up,” after which the contestants introduced themselves wearing identical
apparel with uneven hemlines. The beautiful dresses were beautifully designed
by Arnold Galang.

Towards the close of the evening, the five finalists
where asked a common question by reigning Miss World Wenxia Yu, “Why do you
want to be Miss World Philippines?” All the girls gave their responses but it
was Megan’s straightforward reply that met the most thunderous applause. She
said, “To be Miss World Philippines is to be selfless. And to be selfless, you
need a heart. You have to pour your heart and soul unto others; which is the
very credo of Miss World Philippines – beauty in giving!”

For a time, the local Miss World pageant was one of
the contested titles in the Binibining Pilipinas annual competition. There was
also a time that it became part of the Mutya ng Pilipinas crowns. After Miss
World chairman Julia Morley granted the franchise to Ms. Cory Quirino last
January 2011, the pageant has found a new home.

The panel of judges was comprised of TV executive
Joey Abacan, recording artist Jezza Zaragosa, philanthropist Alice Eduardo,
FILA Phils.’ exec Chris Albert, actor Dennis Trillo, talent manager Arnold
Vegafria, company executives Kenneth Chua (SM Accessories), Miguel Pastor
(Bench), and Clint Navales (Procter & Gamble), ambassadors Reuben Levermore (New Zealand), Alberto Carlos Ballerino (Panama), and Massimo Roscignio (Italy),
and Laguna governor, Hon. E.R. Ejercito as chairman.

Megan was crowned by outgoing Miss World Philippines
Queenrich Rehman together with Cory Quirino and Gov. Ejercito at the
culmination of the coronationrites. Hosted by KC Montero,
Carla Abellana and Victor Basa, with anchorwomen Divine Lee and Gwen Ruais, the
3-hour-long extravaganza was beamed through a taped telecast from the Solaire
Grand Ballroom to a nationwide audience via GMA’s Rainbow network.

Megan will be leaving soon for Jakarta where she’ll
compete with other international beauties in the Miss World pageant slated in
late September.

Call Me An Extremist

Posted on 21:47 by Unknown

I actually have lots of things to do right now, but I'm kind of distracted about something.  Yesterday was my country's independence day.  My country is full of flaws, I'm sure, but it does not mean that Indonesia does not give me anything.  Though small for some people, it contributes on my life's safety and well-being (I can safely eat and do my prayers here) and somehow I always want to show my gratitude. How? through hard work and by raising my hand, gesturing a respect to its flag...once a year for few damn seconds.

I attended the ceremony in my HQ in Jakarta and I was totally disappointed.

Why? Well, for some people...
"It's hot"
  1. 45 minutes under the sun can give you cancer
  2. I don't want to get sweaty and smelly
  3. It can burn my beautiful white skin
Yeah, sure.

"It's symbolic. The most important thing is you work hard for your country"
I don't believe that shit.  If you don't want to do even the smallest easiest gesture for your country, I don't believe you are willing to 'work hard' for it. If someone is unwilling even to give a penny to pauper, what makes you think he'll be willing to give up his car? See? Sugar Honey Ice Tea.
"I didn't raise my hand, but I nodded. I think it's the rule"
Nah, for me you are just lazy because I could not find one rule that says you just need to nod to a flag (well, unless you don't have a hand).

They Attended, Stood, and Talked
This is basic manner actually. If someone talks, you should shut your damn mouth and listen. It's called respect and it is one of the basis of civilized community.  I heard people talking behind me from before the ceremony was started until it was finished 45 minutes later.  I was amazed by his creativity to spout out such long lines of sentences and his ability to maintain his breath (maybe he breathes with his skin in addition of his lungs).

But then...it's just me. I cannot tell people to respect something.  My sentences arose from my disappointments toward my fellow Indonesians and I fully realize that this is my reality, perhaps it's different from their points of view.  I just hope that...they find their own ways to feel grateful for what this country has given them. And...you can call me an extremist for raising my hand in Indonesia's Independence Day.

Cheers,
Dya
